A long-time friend to Phantom Regiment, Chuck Sweeny died last week at Rockford Memorial Hospital. He will be missed both for his candor and his friendship alike.
“Chuck went a long way toward helping the organization out of a mountain of debt back in 2007,” said Tim Farrell, president of the Phantom Regiment board of directors. “His article and follow-up comments were instrumental in bringing donations from Rockford and beyond at a time when Phantom Regiment was in negotiations to retire a long-term note.” It was a turning point for the group, which has been on solid financial footing ever since.
Chuck’s writings often included scores, comments and wit from various competitions, keeping the community up to date on the corps’ competitive standings.
“I always enjoyed talking to Chuck on the subject. His interest level and background knowledge were uplifting and had us both laughing within minutes whenever we talked,” Farrell said.
Phantom Regiment was honored to be named alongside Friends of the Coronado as recipients of donations made in Chuck’s memory. In recognition, Chuck Sweeny will have his name added to the sponsor listing on the Phantom Regiment equipment trailer commemorating his friendship.

Phantom Regiment will be hosting its annual open house meeting this Sunday to discuss the organization’s protection policies (including discrimination, harassment, and whistleblower) with the executive director and members of the board of directors.
The meeting will cover the current policies as well as the first of several training sessions on how to prevent all types of harassment with Jimmie Getter from the Rockford Sexual Assault Counseling.
Phantom Regiment is an organization that welcomes diversity. Additionally, it wants to provide an environment that is safe and free of harassment of any sort for all, but especially its members.
After a board of directors’ retreat in January of 2017, the organization updated its mission, vision, and values:
Vision: An inspired community of empowered and passionate leaders.
Mission: Providing life-changing experiences through performing arts education.
Values: Phamily; Quality; Innovation; Character; and Stability
The Phantom Regiment Board of Directors and the organization’s management, as well as its educational staff, take the health and safety of all students very seriously.
The meeting will take place at 10 a.m. Sunday, May 19 at Rockford University, 5050 E State Street, Rockford, Illinois (in the Auxillary Gym in the Seaver Building).
Phantom Regiment is pleased to announce three inductees to its Hall of Fame Class of 2019.
Tony Hall, Bill Petersen, and Mike Roherty were selected from a pool of outstanding nominations and will be honored at a ceremony in the fall of 2019. They become the 42nd, 43rd, and 44th members of the Phantom Regiment Hall of Fame.
The Phantom Regiment Hall of Fame honors those who have made a significant and long-lasting, positive impact on the Phantom Regiment organization.
Please join us in congratulating the Phantom Regiment Hall of Fame Class of 2019!
TONY HALL, who was nominated by Phantom Regiment Hall of Fame brass caption head and program coordinator Dan Farrell, was hired prior to the 1993 season as the visual designer. He almost immediately gave Phantom Regiment a new visual identity, and the corps won high visual effect at DCI Finals that year. Tony also was the visual designer in 1994 and in 1999. He has been involved in numerous productions as a consultant even when he wasn’t the primary designer.
