Phantom Regiment Academy’s new online instructional series for beginning band students is now available.
The ‘Expert Lesson Series’ is the culmination of months of work by more than a dozen people and provides valuable instruction for beginning band students no matter where they live.
“During this difficult time, we are thrilled to have the ability to combine the educational resources of Phantom Regiment with virtual expertise to produce this necessary educational resource,” said Stan Mauldin, director of Phantom Regiment Academy.
The series provides instruction by some of the best educators in the business on 10 different instruments. The instruction is not meant to be geared specifically toward marching band but rather it’s focused on providing new musicians the fundamentals to succeed. It can be used by individual students or by band directors to supplement classroom instruction.
“For band directors, the series is like a master class on each instrument and is an invaluable resource to help refine your teaching skills,” Mauldin said.
Among the topics the course will cover include:
- Instruction on assembly and mechanics of your instrument
- Fundamentals of creating sound on your instrument
- Basics of embouchure – how your lips and facial muscles work to create music
“The staff teaches fundamental tone production and teaches the necessary steps to become better performers,” Mauldin added. “The combined experience of the incredible staff draws upon a wealth of knowledge and more than a century of experience to instruct the student and teacher on why students make certain sounds – and how to make better fundamental sounds.”
Some may wonder why an organization known for its world-class drum and bugle corps is offering instruction in instruments such as bassoon and flute. It goes back to discussions that started a few years ago during a board of directors meeting when the question was posed: What does the organization want to be?
While there is no doubt that Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps remains the crown jewel of the organization, that question led to a revamp of the mission statement to grow beyond a drum corps to focus more broadly on life-changing performing arts education. The Expert Lesson Series helps achieve that goal and adds to other Phantom Regiment offerings such as its new “Residency” program for bands in the Midwest, the hyper-local Rockford Rhythm percussion ensemble in Rockford and its virtual leadership camps for high school students that attract participation from all over the country.
