Long-time brass arranger JD Shaw has announced that he is retiring after 17 years with Phantom Regiment.

Shaw, who marched in Phantom Regiment in 1990 and 1991 (and Sky Ryders before that), was Phantom Regiment’s brass arranger from 2002 to 2011 and again from 2020 to 2026. During that time, Phantom Regiment won the Drum Corps International world championship in 2008. In between those two stints, he had the same role with Santa Clara Vanguard from 2012 to 2019, which included a DCI title and high brass trophy in 2018. He also arranged for Boston Crusaders prior to his time with Phantom Regiment.
“JD’s work is foundational to many of the most recognizable Phantom Regiment productions in the corps’ history,” said Dan Farrell, DCI and Phantom Regiment Hall of Famer. “JD’s arrangements and sound have shaped Phantom Regiment’s musical identity in the modern era of drum corps.”
In his non-drum corps life, Shaw is an associate professor of horn and Carolina Band staff arranger at the University of South Carolina. He previously was creative director, music arranger, and French hornist of the internationally acclaimed Boston Brass.
Phantom Regiment is profoundly grateful to JD for his extraordinary contributions to the organization and for the creative vision that has helped shape its sound and identity for nearly two decades.
