John attended Northern Illinois University, where he received his Bachelors Degree in Music Education. While at NIU, John performed with the Philharmonic, Wind Ensemble, Marching Huskies, NIU Opera Workshop, Percussion Ensemble, and the world famous Steel Band. John studied conducting at NIU with Dr. Ronnie Wooten, and studied percussion with Robert Chappell, Orlando Cotto, Greg Beyer, and Rich Holly – while he was serving as President of the Percussive Arts Society. John also performed for 10 years with the Sterling Municipal Symphony Band.
While finishing his degree, John served for 3 years at his alma mater of United Township High School in East Moline, IL as Asst. Marching Band Director and Director of Percussion. During his time both the band and percussion sections won numerous awards culminating at the State of Illinois Marching Band Championships where the band won their class 2 years in a row, and the percussion section won Best Percussion in Class 4A, as well as having the 2nd highest score throught the entire day of all 41 bands regardless of class. The concert percussion ensemble received the Best Event of the Day award at the IHSA State Solo/Ensemble contest in 2007.
After graduating, John served as band director for Durand Schools in Durand, IL. He was responsible for 5th grade, 6th grade, Jr. High, and High School bands. The bands saw growth in performance success during is year. The high school band received their first Division I rating in 4 years at the IHSA State Organizational Contest. In 2008 John took over as band director for Salem Community High School in Salem, IL. The marching band won numerous awards in his first year, totaling more than the band had received in the previous 6 years combined. He is a member of the Illinois Music Educator’s Association, the Music Educator’s National Conference, and the Percussive Arts Society.
John is excited to be working on the tour staff for Phantom Regiment and looks forward to another great season!
