Luis Cardenas Casillas
Brass Instructor
Luis Cardenas Casillas received his Bachelors of Music in Instrumental Performance, Magna Cum Laude, from the University of North Texas. He studied trumpet performance with John Holt. While at UNT, he performed with both orchestras, the 5 O’ Clock lab band, the Concert Band and the Symphonic Band along with various chamber groups. He was also named the 2012 Outstanding Undergraduate Brass Student, and was winner of the UNT Vivaldi Trumpet Concerto Competition. He performed as soloist with the Symphonic Band along with Andrew Bezik.
Also while at UNT, he studied topics in Music Education with Dr. Donna Emmanuel, focusing on elementary education and social justice through music education. He worked with second graders at Murray Language Academy Elementary School in Chicago, IL during his studies with Dr. Emmanuel.
Luis marched lead trumpet with the Phantom Regiment from 2009 to 2012. In 2011, he was a visual soloist and music soloist. In 2012, he was music soloist and horn sergeant. Luis was the recipient of the 2012 Mark Glasscoe Memorial Member of the Year Award.
Currently, Luis is working on a Masters in Orchestral Instrument Performance from Roosevelt University. He studies with Channing Philbrick. He teaches lessons in the south suburbs, and is a brass instructor with the Lincoln-Way East Music Department, working with the marching band and chamber groups.
Luis is honored to be part of the brass staff for the 2013 season.
