A long-time friend to Phantom Regiment, Chuck Sweeny died last week at Rockford Memorial Hospital. He will be missed both for his candor and his friendship alike.
“Chuck went a long way toward helping the organization out of a mountain of debt back in 2007,” said Tim Farrell, president of the Phantom Regiment board of directors. “His article and follow-up comments were instrumental in bringing donations from Rockford and beyond at a time when Phantom Regiment was in negotiations to retire a long-term note.” It was a turning point for the group, which has been on solid financial footing ever since.
Chuck’s writings often included scores, comments and wit from various competitions, keeping the community up to date on the corps’ competitive standings.
“I always enjoyed talking to Chuck on the subject. His interest level and background knowledge were uplifting and had us both laughing within minutes whenever we talked,” Farrell said.
Phantom Regiment was honored to be named alongside Friends of the Coronado as recipients of donations made in Chuck’s memory. In recognition, Chuck Sweeny will have his name added to the sponsor listing on the Phantom Regiment equipment trailer commemorating his friendship.
