Mario Bonassin, 68, of Rockford passed away August 21, 2013 at his home. He will be fondly remembered for his 10 years of service with the Phantom Regiment Cadets. Mario was with the PRC from 1975 – 1985, and was the director from 1980 – 1982.

Mario loved working with children. He was a little league baseball coach for Kenrock Community Center in the 1970’s before his own children were old enough to play.

During his time with the Cadets, he held many volunteer positions including instructor, bus driver, designing and constructing our Spook House as well as director.

Mario had an amazing passion and respect for the organization. But most of all, Mario was fiercely protective of his Drum Corps “Kids”, compelling him to be a dedicated, affectionate, and at times, a stern mentor. His devotion to all the kids whose lives he touched throughout his journey was unconditional and created a kinship for him that still stands strong today.

Mario’s family is in our thoughts and prayers.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, August 27, 2013, in Fitzgerald Funeral Home and Crematory, Riverside Chapel, 3910 N. Rockton Ave., with Deacon Ron Magee officiating. Visitation will be from 6 until 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, and from noon until time of service on Tuesday. Burial in Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
