Sean McElroy got his start in rudimental percussion during his sophomore year at Bear Creek High School when he joined the school’s nationally recognized winter percussion ensemble. Sean further cultivated his passion by joining many of the schools music ensembles including marching band, symphonic band, and wind ensemble.
After graduating high school, Sean became a member of the bass line for the Blue Knights Drum and Bugle Corps from Denver, Colorado. He marched in the Blue Knights bass line for the summers of 2000, 2001 and 2002. Along with participating in the Drum Corps, Sean became heavily involved in the Blue Knights World winter percussion ensemble where he marched in the snare line for the 2001 and 2002 seasons and taught the Blue Knights open class ensemble from 2002 through 2006.
Sean finished his final year of marching eligibility in drum corps by becoming a member of the bass line for the 8-time DCI World Champion Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps during the 2003 season. After aging out of the Cadets, Sean became the bass tech for the percussion section, a position he held from 2004 to 2010.
While teaching the Blue Knights and Cadets, Sean developed a strong desire to start a career in percussion/music education. Throughout his residency in Denver, Sean taught at many different high schools throughout the metro area including: Arvada, Pomona, Bear Creek and Legacy High School. While his main position with most of the high schools was as a battery technician, he began getting involved in visual design for winter ensembles. Throughout his career he taught many groups
that became Colorado State Champions and WGI National Finalist.
In 2007, Sean became the visual designer for the Blue Knights World Class Percussion Ensemble helping lead them to a bronze medal at the WGI World Championships and a 6th place finish in 2008.
Sean currently resides in Plymouth, Michigan and is the Percussion Director at Plymouth-Canton High School. He has resumed his role as the visual designer for the Blue Knights Percussion Ensemble for the 2011 season and will be on staff with the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle corps for the summer of 2011.
