Dr. Galen S. Karriker is currently Director of Bands and Professor of Music at The University of Akron in Akron, OH. He coordinates the entire university bands as well as the graduate wind conducting program. Dr. Karriker also teaches Percussion Methods and oversees the annual Ohio Band Directors Conference and High School Band Clinic Festival.
During his tenure as Director of Bands (2013 – present), the University of Akron Symphonic Band has been selected to perform at the 2016 and 2018 Ohio Music Education Association State Professional Development Conference. From 1999 – 2013, Dr. Karriker served as Assistant Director of Bands and Director of Athletic Bands at The University of Akron and the Concert Band performed as a “clinic ensemble” for the OMEA State Convention in 2002 and 2004.
In addition to his teaching schedule, Dr. Karriker is active as a guest clinician, presenting clinic sessions at the 2002, 2003, 2004, 2015 and 2017 Ohio Music Education Association Professional Development Conference. He is also a contributing author for the 11th Edition of Teaching Music Through Performance in Band. Dr. Karriker has conducted numerous honor bands and appeared as a guest conductor at Iowa State University, Austin-Peay State University, and Kansas State University. Since its inception in 2003, Dr. Karriker has served as a conducting and leadership clinician for the Phantom Regiment Educational Programs for high school drum majors at Rockford College in Rockford Illinois, Frostburg State University in Frostburg Maryland, University of Louisiana-Lafayette and The University of Akron.
Dr. Karriker holds professional memberships in the National Band Association, College Band Directors National Association, Mid-American Conference Band Directors Association (President 2003-2005 / Treasurer 2013 to present), Music Educators National Conference, Ohio Music Education Association, and the Percussive Arts Society. He serves on the John Philip Sousa Foundation-Legion of Honor Committee and is a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. Additionally, he is a member of Phi Beta Mu (, Pi Kappa Lambda (03’), and holds honorary membership in Kappa Kappa Psi (92’) and Tau Beta Sigma (00’).
Dr. Karriker earned a bachelor of music education degree from Louisiana State University in 1992, and the master of music and doctor of musical arts degrees in wind conducting from Michigan State University in 1994 and 2012 respectively. At Michigan State University, Dr. Karriker was a student of Kenneth G. Bloomquist, John Whitwell, John T. Madden, and Kevin L. Sedatole.
Prior to joining the faculty at The University of Akron in 1999, Dr. Karriker served on the faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1995 – 1999 as the Assistant to the Director of Bands. As a performer, Dr. Karriker maintains an active schedule of percussion performances and is also active as a folk musician, performing on the tenor and five-string banjo for various student and faculty recitals and ensemble performances. He is married to Kendra Karriker, Director of Orchestras at Chagrin Falls High School, and they have two children, Graeson and Korinne.
