John Baumgartner was elected to the Phantom Regiment Board of Directors in July 2002 and has been on the board since.
He is a fire systems inspector for Tyco Integrated Security.
John started his drum corps career in the Madison Scouts, where he marched 1968-74. He was a member of Phantom Regiment on marching bells in 1975. He later was a percussion instructor for Phantom Regiment and served many years in the 1980s and ’90s as a tour manager.
In 2000 and 2001, John was corps director of Phantom Regiment while continuing to do his full-time job with Tyco. In addition to his role on the board, John has been the events coordinator – in particular running the highly successful Show of Shows and Drums Across the Tri-State in Charleston, W.Va. – since 2002.
He was honored with the organization’s Chevron Award for meritorious service in 1994 and had his name added to the alumni association’s Heritage Award in 2015. He was inducted into the Phantom Regiment Hall of Fame as part of the inaugural class in 2016. John was named Phantom Regiment Volunteer of the Year in 1996 and Drum Corps International Volunteer of the Year in 2019.
John has an associate’s degree in communications and electronics.
In his spare time, he enjoys riding his Harley-Davidson.
John lives in Stillman Valley, Ill., with his wife, Cindi, a long-time Phantom Regiment member and instructor.
