George Vanderhei, 92, of Rockford passed away June 9, 2013 at his home. He will be fondly remembered for his 14 years of service on the Phantom Regiment Board of Directors. George was the organization’s treasurer during some of the most challenging times in its history.
In addition, he spent countless hours upgrading the equipment truck and food truck configurations to facilitate “on the road” travel and also worked Show of Shows for many years in several capacities.
George was instrumental in his support of the corps through his involvement with the Purple Knights bingo, both as President / board member and as a weekly volunteer. His time spent tabulating money, calling numbers, setting up and tearing down, week in and week out is beyond measure.
He initiated the Purple Knights scholarship that was awarded annually to a graduating senior planning on continuing his/her education in the arts.
His wife, Kathleen “Kay” Vanderhei, also a longtime supporter, previously serving as corps office manager, survives him.
George’s family is in our thoughts and prayers.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 15 at Sunset Funeral Home, 8800 N. Alpine Road, Machesney Park. Visitation is from 8 a.m. to time of service. Entombment in Sunset Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family.
